The
English Setter
By Michael Russell
The English Setter was bred to flush out the birds after giving
a quiet alert to its Master that it had found a covey. Through
the years it has kept this instinct strong.
English Setter Origin and History
By John Hinkley
The English Setter dog breed originated initially in France with
the crossing of the Spanish and French pointers nearly 500 years
ago. Brought to England in the 1600s, the English Setter was
further modified with the addition of the Water Spaniel and the
Springer Spaniel. The dog has been used successfully as a
hunting dog, primarily for game birds, for several hundred years
since and is one of the oldest gun dog breeds. The name "Setter"
derives from the unique position the dog assumes when it has
found its prey as the dog crouches low to the ground, setting
his quarry.
English Setter Puppy And Dog Information
By Mitch Endick
The English Setter is a calm dog indoors but very active
outside. She needs plenty of exercise. A properly fenced in yard
would help her get her exercise but she is a digger and climber
so beware when designing her enclosure. She can tend to be a
barker so be prepared to train her early. She can tend to wander
off after a scent so keep tabs on her. She is generally good
with other pets except birds and rodents. She is also good with
older children and generally has a high bite inhibition. As a
reminder, never leave children unsupervised with a dog or puppy.
English Setter Facts and Information
The English Setter is a
breed of dog. It is part of the Setter family, which includes
red Irish Setters, Irish Red and White Setters, and
black-and-tan Gordon Setters.
The English Setter is a gun dog, bred for a mix of endurance and
athleticism.
Description
Appearance
The coat is flat with light feathering of long length. They have
a long, flowing coat that requires regular grooming.
The various speckled coat colours when occurring in English
Setters are referred to as belton; valid combinations are white
with black flecks (blue belton) or with orange flecks (orange
belton— depending on the intensity of the color, they might be
lemon belton or liver belton), or white with black and tan
flecks (tricolour belton).
Temperament
This breed's standard temperament is best described as a
"Gentleman by Nature."[citation needed] However, it can also be
strong-willed and mischievous.[citation needed] English Setters
are energetic, people-oriented dogs, that are well suited to
families who can give them attention and activity, or to working
with a hunter, where they have a job to do. They are active dogs
outside that need plenty of exercise in a good sized fenced-in
yard. Inside they tend to be lower energy and love to be couch
potatoes and lap dogs that love to cuddle. Many are good around
children.
English Setters are very
intelligent and can be trained to perform about any task another
breed can do, with the exception of herding. However, they are
not always easy to train, as their natural bird instinct tends
to distract them in outdoor environments.[citation needed] Their
temperament is considered a soft one. Therefore they are very
sensitive to criticism, and could be unwilling to repeat a
behaviour out of fear to disappoint the trainer. Positive
reinforcement training methods therefore work best for English
Setters.
Health
A relatively healthy breed, Setters have few genetic problems
but some problems occasionally occur. Canine hip dysplasia,
elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness, and canine hypothyroidism
are some of the more well-known ailments that can affect this
dog. A specific form of cancer is also common in older members
of the breed. Life expectancy is between 10-12 years.
