Batman Begins: The Creation of the Dark Knight
The History of the Batman started in the late 1930's when
creator Bob Kane was inspired by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's increased income
due to the success of Superman. At the time Kane was only making 40 dollars a
week. Thus Bob Kane inspired by heroes like Zorro and villains like the man who
wore a bat costume in The Bat Whispers 1930 and Bela Lugosi's Dracula .
One who rarely gets credit is writer Bill Finger who Kane later said he
wished had been given credit next to his name. Bill Finger came up with the idea
to have Batman's eyes a blank white with no pupils. He also named him Bruce
Wayne. The first appearance of Batman would be in Detective Comics #27, May
1939. The idea for Batman's origin of being a orphan who became the Dark Knight
to avenge his parents death came later in issue #33 of Detective Comics. The early
Batman was dark, and villains had a tendency to fall off rooftops or go up in
flame in the presence of an uncaring Batman. As time progressed the comics
became more kid friendly as heroes developed a code against killing the bad
guys.
The introduction of Robin was to give Batman someone to talk
to and give the writer the ability to create dialogue. Sales nearly doubled with
the addition of the Boy Wonder. It gave kids someone to relate to in the
stories. Kane personally preferred solo Batman adventures, but wanted to gain
the biggest audience possible for Batman.
By the time the 1960's came around, camp was in for Batman
once Adam West and Burt Ward took over in the 1966 Batman tv show. Batman would
get his own cartoon series more than once over the next several years, and would
appear in cartoon shows like the Super Friends and Justice League team shows. Batman would join
Superman as a big screen draw. Batman's first big screen adventure was in a
1940's movie serial, but it's Tim Burton's Batman movie starring Michael Keaton
that really made a splash in Hollywood earning millions of dollars. More films
would follow with Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and now Christian Bale in Batman
Begins. Bale's Batman is a return to the roots of Batman's dark side first
envisioned by Bob Kane. No Robin or campy anything for this movie.
