Popeye was
created by Elzie Crisler Segar, and first appeared in the King Features comic
strip Thimble Theater on January 17, 1929. Popeye's comic strip still appears in
newspaper even today. Popeye movie cartoon shorts were produced up until 1957,
then Popeye cartoons were produced for television between 1960 to 1962 by King
Features. From 1978 to 1982 and 1987 to 1988 Hanna Barbera created a very long
lasting Popeye series going as far as to giving Popeye a son and creating a
series with Olive Oyle in the army. Most of the episodes featured Popeye vs
Bluto in a hunt for treasure. In 2004,
Lions Gate Films produced a computer-animated television special, Popeye's
Voyage: The Quest for Pappy, which was made to coincide with the 75th
anniversary of Popeye. Popeye has his
own ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, and statues in spinach producing towns
have been erected in his honor. He also has his very own spinach brand. Of
course spinach is Popeye's favorite food giving him super strength whenever he
needs it to save Olive Oyle from Bluto who was also sometimes referred to as
Brutus. In 1980 Popeye got his own big
screen movie starring
Robin
Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyle. |
