On July 20, 1775, General Washington issued the order:
"The General orders this day to be religiously observed by the forces under his Command, exactly in manner directed by the Continental Congress. It is therefore strictly enjoined on all officers and soldiers to attend Divine service."
David Barton's book The Bulletproof George Washington documents how during the French & Indian War (before America became a nation), an Indian chief singled out Washington telling his men to take him out. It is said that the Indian warrior Red Hawk (who was a skilled marksman and never missed) shot at Washington eleven times and the bullets were unable to penetrate him. Even General Washington's jacket was said to have holes in it from gunfire. At the end of the war the Indian chief sought to meet Washington, whom he said was protected by "the Great Spirit."
The British, who were not accustomed to fighting unless in an open field, were being annihilated. Washington rode back and forth across the battle delivering British General Braddock's orders unscathed. As the battle raged, every other officer on horseback, except Washington, was shot down. Even General Braddock was killed, at which point British troops fled in confusion. After the battle, on July 18, 1755, Washington wrote to his brother, John A. Washington:
"But by the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation; for I had four bullets through my coat, and two horses shot under me, yet escaped unhurt, although death was leveling my companions on every side of me!"
As for the Indian chief, he ceased firing at Washington being convinced that the Great Spirit protected him. Fifteen years after the battle, Washington and Dr. Craik (a close friend from his boyhood) were met near the junction of the Great Kanawha and Ohio Rivers by a company of Indians, led by an old, respected chief.
A council fire was kindled and the chief addressed Washington through an interpreter speaking to him about the battle 15 years earlier.
"I have traveled a long and weary path that I might see the young warrior of the great battle. It was on the day when the white man's blood mixed with the streams of our forest that I first beheld this chief [Washington]. I called to my young men and said, 'Mark yon tall and daring warrior. Quick let your aim be certain, and he dies. Our rifles were leveled, rifles which, but for you, knew not how to miss--twas all in vain, a power mightier far than we, shielded you. Seeing you were under the special guardianship of the Great Spirit, we immediately ceased to fire at you."
The Indian chief of noble character went on to say: "I am old and soon shall be gathered to the great council fire of my fathers in the land of shades, but ere I go, there is something bids me speak in the voice of prophecy. Listen! The Great Spirit protects that man [pointing at Washington], and guides his destinies--he will become the chief of nations, and a people yet unborn will hail him as the founder of a mighty empire. I am come to pay homage to the man who is the particular favorite of Heaven, and who can never die in battle."
True to the Indian's voice of prophecy, Washington never was wounded in any battle. He later became President and Founder of the United States of America. Because of God's help and Divine intervention, Washington gathered acclaim and honor from the same field where his commander received only dishonor and death.
During battle General Washington rode around among his army admonishing each and every one to fear God, to put away the wickedness that has set in and to practice the Christian values. Respecting God's Word, believing in the atonement of sins through Christ, and bearing himself in humility and gentleness Washington led his troops. While he in purity of heart fought off plunderers from afar to preserve our country, Washington provided our soldiers an example to follow today.
