This art print, by Norbert Rosing, shows a beautiful
white arctic fox sitting in the snow. The arctic fox, as
you might have guessed, is found in arctic regions,
usually wherever seals and polar bears are present in
and on ice floes. In the winter, the fox will follow
polar bears hoping to eat the bear's leftovers.
The arctic fox burrows into the ground or snow for
protection from the arctic cold. They do not hibernate
and can withstand temperatures as low as -50° Celsius.
The arctic fox feeds on lemmings, voles, squirrels,
birds, bird eggs, berries, fish and carrion. Arctic
foxes rarely live to be more than 10 years old.
In winter, Arctic foxes are solid white, like the one
pictured above, and in summer they are grey-brown . They
may also be light brown, grey, chocolate, or black with
a bluish hue. They grow to be about 50-70 cm long, and
stand 28-32 cm high. Their tails are 28-40 cm long, and
they weigh 2.5-8 kg.
Both parents care for young foxes. The male hunts for
food, while the female nurses and cares for the young. A
litter of 4-11 pups is usually born in May or June. Pups
are blind and usually weigh 50-150 grams at birth. They
open their eyes when they are 2 weeks old. Pups are
weaned at 5-6 weeks old, and usually leave the den at
14-15 weeks old.
