History of the Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was designed by a French sculptor named
Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, and was given to the United States by
the people of France in recognition of the French-American alliance
during the American Revolution. Construction of the statue began in
1875, and was completed in Paris in 1884. The Statue was presented
to America by the people of France on July 4, 1884. In 1885, the
statue was dismantled, into 350 pieces, and shipped to the United
States on a French ship called the "Isere". Lady Liberty was
reassembled in America and unveiled on October 28, 1886, on Liberty
Island, where she has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United
States ever since. Liberty Island, formerly known as Bedloe's
Island, is located in the State of New York.
The Statue of Liberty stands over 305 feet high
from ground to torch tip. There are 354 steps inside the statue and
its pedestal, and 25 viewing windows in the crown. The seven rays of
Liberty's crown represent the seven seas and seven continents of the
world. Lady Liberty holds a tablet in her left hand that reads "July
4, 1776" (in Roman numerals), America's Independence Day. The Statue
of Liberty was designated a National Monument on October 15, 1924.
She was extensively restored before her spectacular centennial on
July 4, 1986. |
