This beautiful art print is from our lighthouses
section. The stunning blue water of Casco Bay merged in
the horizon with the blue sky make a beautiful backdrop
for the Portland Head Lighthouse located in Cape
Elizabeth, Maine. The 80 foot stone tower was built in
1791. The lighthouse was automated in 1989, and is still
an active U.S. Coast Guard aid in navigation. The
keeper's house that still stands was built in 1891, on
the foundation of the original keeper's house. In 1992,
the Museum at Portland Head Lighthouse opened in the
former keeper's house. The museum focuses on the history
of the lighthouse and nearby Fort Williams.
Other buildings still standing near the lighthouse
include: the fog signal building, which was
reconstructed in 1975, the oil house built in 1891, and
a garage. The garage has been converted into a gift
shop. |
